Poplar
9’ x 35’ x 40’
Rice Gallery, Houston, TX
This site-specific, temporary installation of over 10,000 poplar sticks embodies contradictions. Meticulously assembled with only matchstick pegs, the three-dimensional grid is an rigid, predictable, quintessentially human structure. Yet its boundary is undefined and amorphous, creating a meandering organic field, seemingly alive and in flux. The piece cannot be perceived from a single vantage point but must be entered, navigated and explored. It reveals it surprising visual and spatial phenomena gradually and rewards time spent looking.
