Poplar installation on theater walls
Crosstown Concourse, Memphis, TN
Covering over 3,000 SF of surface area, this sculptural wall treatment serves both the aesthetic and acoustical needs for the newly built performing arts theater at Crosstown Concourse in Memphis, TN. The raw poplar panels establish a tone of warmth and organic movement within an otherwise dark and rectilinear theater. The profiles of the layers of wood, each hand-drawn and hand-cut from over 9,000 poplar blocks, were designed specifically to diffuse sound evenly, eliminating echo without absorbing sound, and dramatically enhancing the listening experience during acoustical performances.
